In 1887 the village access trail became part of the Valdez-Eagle Trail, which was constructed by miners during the gold rush. In the early 1900's a trading post established. People would come to trade furs and other items for groceries.
Today Chistochina is still an Athabascan village, it has remained one of the most traditional of all the Ahtna Athabascan villages. The elders in the village still teach the younger generations the traditions and culture.
